Court upholds classroom ban
The teacher in this case was brought before the Teaching Agency in respect of allegations of making inappropriate homophobic comments . The teacher held devout Christian beliefs and made a number of comments attacking the “ gay lifestyle”.
He was made subject to a prohibition order preventing him from working in any school or sixth form college for unacceptable professional conduct. He appealed on the basis that it represented a breach of his rights to freedom of speech and religious belief. The judge rejected these arguments and maintained the prohibition on the basis that it was justified especially where the teacher had failed to demonstrate insight.
